PPL Technical Sales Engineer, Stuart Barry: Are you disposing your condensate correctly?

In today’s modern compressor rooms, much emphasis is placed on the performance and green credentials of the compressor and associated ancillaries.

But has the condensate treatment been discussed?  Are you aware of the environmental responsibilities your organisation has when disposing condensate?

Often an overlooked or even poorly advised topic; what to do with the condensate your compressor system produces?

Condensate must be collected by a registered waste carrier or treated prior to disposal using an oil/water separator. Approximately 95% of compressor condensate is water, so it makes financial sense to separate the oil from the condensate prior to disposal.

Environmental regulations strictly prohibit the discharge of condensate drained from compressed air systems into foul drains/sewers, as it is classified as hazardous industrial waste.

Incorrect disposal and potential Environment Agency prosecution carry heft fines to the prosecuted business.

The solution is generally low cost and very effective, compared to fines of up to £20,000 in the UK for failing to comply with the regulations.
